Matchday 13 of the Premier League began with a 1-1 draw between the top two, Manchester City and Liverpool, at the Etihad Stadium.

A late equaliser from Trent Alexander-Arnold meant there remains just a point between the champions and Jurgen Klopp's Reds. It was also a boost for Arsenal ahead of their match with Brentford later on November 25, which ended in a 1-0 win for the Gunners.

Elsewhere this weekend, Chelsea were trounced by an injury-hit Newcastle United, while Nottingham Forest lost a thriller to Brighton & Hove Albion and Bournemouth piled more misery on struggling Sheffield United.

On Sunday, in-form Everton host Manchester United in a game likely to be dominated by protests from the home fans. In a seismic development on November 17, the Toffees were plunged into the relegation zone when they were deducted 10 points for being found to have breached the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules.

Aston Villa also picked up an impressive 2-1 win away at Tottenham.

The Sporting News will update the table below and break down each of the key races throughout the 2023/24 season.

Premier League title 2023/24

Before the season started, Manchester City were the heavy favourites to repeat as Premier League champions for the fourth straight season, and the most serious challenge could once again come from Arsenal, according to most sportsbooks.

Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Newcastle United were deemed the most likely to press that duo, with Chelsea the only one in the group that does not have to worry about European cup competitions after failing to qualify last season.

Champions League spots, European places 2023/24

The big news in 2023/24 is that there's a scenario in which the Premier League could see the top five teams all qualify for the UEFA Champions League if England finishes as one of the top two performing nations in European club cup competitions.

If the FA Cup winner or Carabao Cup winner finish in the top four, the European cup berth that accompanies that title would go to the next team in the Premier League standings not already qualified for Europe.

Premier League European places in 2023/24:

  • Champions League berths (4 or 5): Top 4 or Top 5 places
  • Europa League berths (2): 5th or 6th place + FA Cup winner
  • Conference League qualifying berth (1): Carabao Cup winner

Premier League relegation 2023/24

According to the sportsbooks prior to the start of the season, there were eight teams that stood out as candidates to finish in the bottom three places and suffer relegation down to the English second-tier Championship.

Luton Town, who were the last team to win promotion to the Premier League via last season's Championship playoff final, were the team deemed most likely to finish in the bottom three.

Fellow promoted side Sheffield United were not too far behind, while the third promoted club, Burnley, were tipped to survive based on their longer preseason odds.

Meanwhile, supporters of Everton, Wolves, Bournemouth, and Nottingham Forest were projected to be in for another nail-biting season.

Odds below as of August 10, 2023, prior to the start of the Premier League season.
